The current incarnation of pianist Bobo Stenson’s trio, featuring Anders Jormin on double bass and percussionist Jon Fält, has been active for nearly two decades, during which they have recorded four albums. The first, Cantando (2008), explored Bobo’s fluid ability to embrace a wide range of influences and musical languages, seamlessly integrating the new lineup into his personal sound from the very beginning. The album led The Guardian to state that “few contemporary jazz groups sustain such an evocative atmosphere as Swedish pianist Stenson’s trio, or conjure so many moods through a variety of material ranging from Ornette Coleman to Alban Berg.”
The praise continued with Indicum (2012), with The New York Times noting that Bobo “is rightly evoked for his subtleties of touch and mood,” followed by Contra la Indecisión in 2018, which BBC Music Magazine described as a “beautiful session,” proving that “there is still much to explore and reveal within this format.” More revelations and further proof of the trio’s distinguished artistry are ever-present in Sphere.
