MARIA JOAO & CARLOS BICA QUARTET
by on February 17, 2025 in Uncategorized

The collaboration between these two great names in Portuguese jazz dates back to the 1980s, with recordings on the albums Conversa (1986) and Sol (1991). After a decade of performing together and numerous concerts around the world, their paths diverged. Now, 25 years later, they reunite with the complicity of Gonçalo Neto (guitar) and João Farinha (keyboards), two of the most talented musicians of Portugal’s new generation.

Maria João, a singer with a unique style, has become a benchmark in improvised music. With an extraordinary vocal range and unparalleled interpretative intensity, she has gained international recognition, securing her place among the finest voices of today. Maria João is a regular at the world’s most prestigious music festivals and remains the only Portuguese musician ever nominated for the European Jazz Prize.

Carlos Bica is one of the few Portuguese musicians to have achieved international prominence, establishing himself as a key figure on the European jazz scene. Leading multiple musical projects and contributing to theater, film, and dance, he is best known for his trademark trio, Azul, featuring guitarist Frank Möbus and drummer Jim Black, which has become a defining symbol of his career as a bassist and composer.
