Acclaimed by Pitchfork as “astounding… one of the best saxophonists of the moment,” alto saxophonist, composer, and educator Rudresh Mahanthappa is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in 21st-century jazz. He has released more than a dozen albums, including the critically acclaimed Bird Calls, which topped many “Best of 2015” year-end lists and was hailed by PopMatters as “complex, rhythmically vital, free-spirited while still being traversed by mutant structures.” His most recent release, Hero Trio, was considered one of the best jazz albums of 2020 by both critics and fans alike.

Rudresh has been named Alto Saxophonist of the Year in the Downbeat International Critics Poll for nine out of the last twelve consecutive years (2011-2013, 2015-2018, 2020-2021), and has won the same title for five consecutive years in the Jazz Journalists’ Association Poll (2009-2013), as well as again in 2016. He was also named “Best Jazz Artist” by Village Voice in 2015. He has received the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, among other honors. Currently, he serves as the Anthony H. P. Lee ’79 Director of Jazz at Princeton University.
